Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Semana Santa (Holy Week). In Honduras, Holy Week (all 8 days) is an important holiday. Not only does it mark the last days and resurrection of Jesus Christ, but it's a week of holiday and relaxation for most Hondurans.
Typically, most people will attend mass or services in honor of Palm Sunday to start the day. This picture shows a small church decorated for a wedding. I imagine most Catholic churches will have palm leaves instead.
The upper and middle class folk leave the city for the week, or at least 4 or 5 days. As far as I know, they all go to the beaches on the north coast of Honduras, where the beaches of La Ceiba, Tela, and Roatan beckon the masses. I never go to the beach for Holy Week, because I can't imagine sharing the tiny beach strips with a million beachgoers.
I stay in the city even though nearly every place will be closed.
We will enjoy the peace and quiet, taking breaks from work, and sleeping or relaxing.
